With the magnetic scanner it is possible to obtain a 256 gray levels image of a document, where each gray level, from white to black, is proportional to the intensity of the magnetic field detected. The reading system is a linear sensor array; as the document is transported under the array an image is obtained showing the intensity and distribution of magnetic features.

This system has been used in printing quality control on banknotes sheets printing machines.
